How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

As an organisation, we’re entirely dedicated to providing a way for students to continue their education; you won’t find anything on our platform that hasn’t been thoroughly designed to allow our students to achieve their very best. We focus on students with barriers to learning which includes those with Special Educational Needs. We also continually improving the platform and services we have available, for example, our teachers are constantly being trained on the best techniques and ways to understand the needs of our students or by developing our platform with SEN in mind.

We develop our teaching around innovative and proven ways to increase young people’s engagement and ability. Our lessons are shorter and more focused than in a standard classroom (30 minutes for GCSEs and 60 minutes for A Levels).

On the NVA, all of our students are placed in classes with the same ability; we feel that learning together at the same pace is an important way to alleviate stress and to feel more comfortable within a classroom. As students can privately chat with the teacher during lessons if they don’t understand, again anxiety is reduced.

One of the great things about the Nisai Virtual Academy is that every lesson is recorded and students can look at these recordings anytime, day or night. This really helps if health stops a student from attending for a few days/weeks as you can still catch up at your own pace when you’re ready. If you have a hospital appointment that clashes with your timetable then watching it later proves no problem. A short stay in hospital for tests can be covered by watching the recordings on returning home, or in many cases we can link to you directly whilst in hospital so if you are ‘free’ you can attend in the normal way. During an induction, we give students a tour of the platform to ensure a smooth transition.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

For many young people who have been out of school, isolation can become a problem.  However, the Nisai Virtual Academy gives our students plenty of opportunities to interact with other people in addition to providing lots of support.

There are plenty of Clubs and Societies to choose from, as well as the Chill Out Zone, a virtual common room, in which to meet other students or just chill out. More importantly, students can communicate with others who have similar problems and anxieties and share experiences. Students discover they are not alone and can actually help and support each other through what can be difficult times.  Our magazine N'Tribe is written and produced by students and there is an active Student Council. We also invite guest speakers who regularly talk about topics including health and wellbeing or career options.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

The way that we carefully track our student’s progress is what makes Nisai different from any other organisation. Our software and system allow us to know exactly how your student is doing across all areas of their studies. Every student that begins with Nisai goes through a short induction process that assesses their abilities in order to be placed in an appropriate class.

From this start point we are able to track everything from attendance, behaviour and engagement in lessons to homework assignments and progress. We can tell parents, teachers and designated members of the Local Authority exactly how their student is doing. This information can be accessed 24/7, and the designated contacts will be notified by email if the student doesn’t attend their lessons within 10 minutes of the start time.

Students are also able to track their assignments and can check if an assignment has been completed, unfinished or not started yet. They will also be able to find out what level they’re working at and how they can better improve.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Along with their educational needs, we try to provide a holistic experience and community through the Nisai Virtual Academy.

We have student-centred Personal Wellbeing Plan, which allows us to meet the pastoral needs of your student. Re-evaluated every 6 weeks, the plan is the basis of discussions with your student about how they think they are doing, what they think of their classes, how their health or family life is. We work alongside any issues the student may be facing in order to take appropriate measures to cater to the student’s needs.

Due to the nature of the platform, if your child choses to study at a certain location such as at home or in a library, it is up to parents or teachers to ensure this facility is suitable for them, and enhances their learning. However, Nisai will provide a connectivity test to confirm there aren’t any technical difficulties logging on from that location.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Teaching staff at Nisai have been specially trained and have additional training to ensure they can teach SEN students. As all lessons are recorded, we’re able to consistently improve the quality or our teaching and service.  We are partnered with Dyslexia Action and ASEND to provide additional support to students and staff.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

All of our extra-curricular activities are opt in and online, which allows all students to take part. We have forums, clubs, a student newspaper, guest speakers, chill-out areas, house groups and competitions to ensure each student feels part of a school community.  All outings as such are virtual and so no one is left out!  Students input to events are gathered by the Student Officer who ensures there is something of interest for all.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Our classes can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection and a laptop, tablet or PC.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

All of our resources are dedicated to providing classes for students with SEN.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

We try to make starting as quick and seamless as possible from the point of a student being referred to Nisai.

Once a local authority has decided to place a student with us and have signed an order form, they then have to fill in an online referral for their student. This doesn’t take long, but allows us to know necessary information about the student such as contact details and learning barriers. Once this is complete, we send the student a welcome pack which includes a headset, and we schedule connectivity tests. This ensures before any lessons start, that the student is able to access the platform.

Next, every student that studies with Nisai goes through a short induction programme; this allows us to assess their working levels and timetable them into the appropriate classes.
