Disability sports and fitness
Team GB's success at the London 2012 Paralympic Games has generated more interest in disability sport than ever before. Here are some options for getting involved locally:
Grangewaters outdoor education and activity centre | Grangewaters has a 25-acre watersports lake set within a 70-acre site, where a wide range of challenging, creative, educational outdoor activities, courses and programmes are on offer. Facilities have been made accessible to all throughout. Staff are on hand to help individuals meet personal challenges, ranging from tough physical sport to leisurely enjoyment of facilities. Groups are also welcomed, regardless of disability or special needs. |
Essex Outlaws wheelchair basketball | Wheelchair basketball is a sport that allows disabled and non-disabled people to participate, and is also a Paralympic sport. Within the UK there are many different leagues. Essex Outlaws play home games at Riverside Ice & Leisure in Chelmsford, and recruit both competitive players and volunteers. |
English Federation of Disability Sport | The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) is the national body for disabled people in sport and physical activity throughout England. The aim of the charity is to increase opportunities at all levels of participation. |
Special Needs Activity Club | Special Needs Activity Club (SNAC) organises activities, outings and events for children and young people with all types of special needs, disabilities and learning difficulties living in the Essex area. SNAC is based at the The Beehive centre in West Street, Grays. |
Thurrock and District Mencap Society | Thurrock and District Mencap Society is a local charity that gives support to children and adults with learning disabilities or special needs and their carers in having an active social life and being able to participate in sports and activity projects. |
Thurrock WADERS | Water Assisted Disabled Exercise and Rehabilitation Scheme (WADERS) offers exercise in water for people with a physical impairment. It is an opportunity to maintain or improve muscle strength, joint flexibility and general fitness levels. |
