Thurrock Sensory Service for Children & Young People with Vision Impairment

Thurrock Sensory Service’s Vision Impaired Resource Base is located in St Clere’s Secondary mainstream school. With over 15 years of service, our enhanced provision offers exceptional support for young people with vision impairment.

Our pupils with VI will benefit from a team including Qualified Teachers for children and young people with vision impairments (QTVI’s), a Habilitation Officer, an Assistive Technology Specialist & Ambassador, and an array of highly Specialist Learning Support Assistants. This influential team mediating with mainstream class teachers to enable access to learning.

We endeavour to promote inclusivity in the classroom by delivering innovative strategies which take advantage of the 11 areas of the new curriculum framework (CFVI). This ensures our pupils have equitable access to the curriculum and independently maintain learning pace. Furthermore, we deliver this person-centered curriculum to ensure our children have the confidence to succeed in their careers, live independently safely in home, and participate within their community.

Making full use of all the child's senses we achieve this using both highly specialist and mainstream resources such as; braille, assistive technology, large print, embossers for tactile diagrams, accessibility software on apple, Android and Windows devices.

The support gives them independence skills to excel in the classroom and in their chosen career paths in adulthood.

The pupils are funded by the Local Education Authority, as per the needs identified in their Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP).

All VI pupils attending the resource base must have an EHCP.

Outreach Service

Additionally, we offer an outreach service to other educational institutions across Thurrock and beyond upon referral, providing guidance, strategies, training and other recommendations to ensure mainstream provisions are equipped to support children with various eye conditions.
