Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays & Bank Holiday Mondays 10:00am - 3:00pm
Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre has a wealth of local and military history. The museum is located in former Royal Gunpowder Magazine, No. 5, that is grade I listed and a Scheduled Ancient monument. It was part of a Government Garrison site, located along the banks of The River Thames at Purfleet, now Purfleet-on-Thames.
The magazines, originaly there were five once stored the nations gunpowder, where all of the Governments gunpowder was proved and tested for the Army and Navy. The other four magazines along with other Garrison buildings were demolished in the Seventies' to make way for the Garrison Housing Estate.
The Heritage Centre houses over 15,000 historical artefacts and has displays and memorabilia relating to the history of Purfleet-on-Thames, the building and military. Local history includes: Thames Board Mills (the largest paper manufacturer in the world), Van den Burgh and Jurgens, later Unilever (the largest margarine manufacture in theworld), Purfleet Rifle Range, brewer Samuel Whitbread , (whose family built the village). There is a section on Dracula that has a connection to Purfleet by author Bram Stoker. There is a Royal Family section. We are proud to house many Gurkha exhibits in a bay assemled by the Gurkhas themselves.
It is a fascinating day out. For information on events please phone or email
